Errore IIS file applicationHost.config vuoto

Mi è capitato di ritrovare la macchina con Windows Server 2008 SP2 riavviata con IIS 7 bloccato, non era neanche possibile accedere alla configurazione tramite mmc.
Negli eventi segnalava questo errore:

Andando a vedere i file i file di configurazione di IIS in %Windir%\system32\inetsrv\config il file applicationHost.config risultava vuoto o meglio era pieno di caratteri null.
L'unica cosa che ho potuto fare e ripristinare l'ultima configurazione salvata.
Per vedere l'elenco delle configurazioni salvate:
restituisce un elenco simile al seguente:
a questo punto ho restorato l'ultima configurazione:
e fatto ripartire IIS:
